这座水族馆的前身为UCLA所拥有的Ocean Discovery Center。自2003年以来由Heal the Bay ，一个非盈利性组织所经营，提供许多海洋教育计划和特别活动 ，致力于海洋保护，污染防治，环境教育并开放给民众入内参观，每年吸引超过65,000人次（约15,000名学生）来自世界各地。
