最近在圣地牙哥的沙滩上，游客们可能会注意到一些闪闪发亮、仿佛宝石般的紫色小贝壳。
加州大学圣地牙哥分校的史克里普斯海洋研究所科学家(Scientists at the University of California, San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography )指出，这些是名为 Janthina（洋紫螺） 的罕见海螺品种。牠们以鲜艳的紫罗兰色贝壳闻名，并能借由一种天然的「气泡筏」漂浮在海面上。
这些海螺因其贝壳呈现宝石般的紫色光泽而引人注目，仿佛散落在沙滩上的天然饰品。牠们原本栖息于亚热带至热带的开放海域，能够借由自然产生的「气泡筏」漂浮在海面上。由于近期海水异常温暖，洋紫螺被洋流带向南加州沿岸，才会在像拉荷雅（La Jolla Shores）这样的地区被发现。

此外，洋紫螺也以「葡萄牙战舰水母」（Portuguese man o’ war）为食。这两种生物都拥有类似帆船的构造，因此能随风漂浮于海面上。
