What is the H1-B visa?
For many international students, the H-1B work visa is their best available option to stay in the U.S. after graduating from college. The H1-B visa is granted to those working in professions that require specialized knowledge. It allows U.S. companies to temporarily employ highly educated or experienced foreign workers. A H1-B worker may stay in the U.S. as long as he or she works for his or her sponsoring employer, for periods up to 6 years. One of the great aspects about the H-1B visa is that it allows the visa holder to apply for permanent residence (receive a green card) while they continue their employment.

What is the H1-B lottery?
The U.S. government limits the number of H1-B visas that are issued. Currently, the H1-B is capped at 65,000 visas, with an additional 20,000 visas reserved for those with Master’s degrees or higher. Each year, the government begins accepting applications on April 1. Usually, more people apply for H-1B visas than there are available. When that happens, a random lottery is conducted. Those that are selected can then proceed with processing their visa application.
